description 652,219. Travelling-wave tubes. WESTERN ELECTRIC CO., Inc. Nov. 28, 1946, No. 2191/50. Convention date, Jan. 11. Divided out of 652,155. [Class 39 (i)] In a travelling-wave amplifier, the electron stream is projected at a suitable velocity through a hollow wave-guide provided with transverse parallel conductive baffles or other filter sections, so that an energy interchange occurs between the electron stream and the high-frequency waves propagated down the guide from an input connection to an output connection. The wave-guide 49, Fig. 1, forming a part of the envelope, contains a plurality of transverse partitions 58, for slowing down the velocity of the waves to that of the electron stream. Apertures 60 in the partitions 58, additional to the central apertures 59 for the passage of the electron stream, are provided to give the pass-band of the guide a desirable characteristic depending on their shapes, sizes and locations. The central apertures 59 in the partitions 58, may be fitted with cylinders, Fig. 2 (not shown), and the cylinders 65, Fig. 3B, supported by rods 68, instead of by partitions. The cylinders 65 may be interconnected in series by conductors 95, or in parallel to vary the filter-type characteristics of the transmission path. High frequency loss may be provided in the transmission path to prevent self-oscillation by rods 61, Fig. 1, or by plating portions of the guide structure. The loss may be made sufficiently large near the centre of the guide to absorb completely the input energy, the output energy being entirely generated in the output portion of the guide. Specification 652,155 is referred to.
