description A process and an apparatus are described for the production of a filter having the form of a ceramic honeycomb monolith 1, starting from a green body of the honeycomb monolith having channels open on both sides. An image detection and processing system scans the ends of the monolith and determines the deviations of the actual geometry of the channels to be alternately closed from the geometry of an ideal honeycomb. The image processing system determines zones on each end 19,20 of the monolith 1, which correspond in predeterminable tolerances to the geometry of the ideal honeycomb, zones having as high a number of channels as possible being determined. In accordance with the determination of the mentioned zones, a processing path is specified which predetermines which of the metering heads 17 and 18 having a different number of nozzles is driven. The nozzles then spray a plugging composition into the specified channels. After sealing the channels provided on the one end 19, the monolith 1 is rotated through 180 DEG in a clamping and handling apparatus 11, whereupon the channels on the second end 20 are sealed in a corresponding manner, but in a complementary pattern to that on the first end 19. The monolith 1 thus prepared is then subjected to a ceramic forming process.
