The member may be an airfoil shaped strut (10), useful in a gas turbine engine hot section, which is made by disposition of plies 22 formed from the matrix mixture and fibres, e.g. fabric, about forming blocks 24, e.g. of aluminium, the assembly being placed within forming dies (26A, 26B) and pressure being applied while the assembly is heated. The resulting preform is sintered in a furnace to a consolidation temperature, without external pressure being applied. The ceramic particles are preferably alumina and the filler may be pyrophillite.
