description A fibre reinforced composite member is made by interspersing a matrix mixture slurry formed from a ceramic matrix precursor, a liquid compatible with the precursor and ceramic discontinuous material comprising particles about reinforcing fibres to provide a prepreg preform, which is heated in an oxidizing atmosphere to a temperature at which the precursor is transformed to a ceramic phase which bonds said ceramic particles into a matrix about the fibres. The member may be an airfoil shaped strut (10) useful in a gas turbine engine hot section, which is made by disposition of plies 22, formed from said matrix mixture slurry and fibres, e.g. fabric about forming blocks 24, the assembly being placed within forming dies (26A, 26B) and pressure being applied while the assembly is heated. The resulting preform is sintered in a furnace to a consolidation temperature.
