Adiabatic pressure relief valve for gases - supplied to laser excitation chamber, has eccentric inner cylinder

A quick closure valve with a slot nozzle and used for the adiabatic pressure relief of gas mixt. for supply to a sepd. isotope-selective laser excitation chamber consists of an outer cylindrical body with a single axial slot and contg. an eccentrically mounted rotary inner cylinder with multiple axial slots. The inner cylinder is in sliding contact with the inlet to the outer cylinder slot, and at each side of that slot are axial sealing strips whose surface merges into the inside face of the outer cylinder. The inner cylinder is rotated by a coaxial canned motor sealed from the space surrounding the outer cylinder. The inner cylinder may be hollow or mostly solid, in the latter case having a small axial cavity for compressed gas requiring relief. Appts. is for the sepn. of U isotopes, but also for laser spectrometer analysis etc. Gas pressure is relieved in synchronism with laser excitation, and is readily adjustable, even in modified appts. where other gases are added. Premature reactions are largely avoided.
