The inner cylinder may be hollow or mostly solid, in the latter case having a small axial cavity for compressed gas requiring relief. Appts. is for the sepn. of U isotopes, but also for laser spectrometer analysis etc. Gas pressure is relieved in synchronism with laser excitation, and is readily adjustable, even in modified appts. where other gases are added. Premature reactions are largely avoided.
