A pin setting device for inserting pins by this substantially smooth pushing force comprises an elongate guiding means having an open end 13, 14, a piston 20 movably mounted in the guiding means, jacking means 30 for locating the open end of the guiding means at a predetermined area of a mine roof and fluid means for applying a substantially smooth pushing force to the piston to urge the piston towards the open end of the guiding means. The hydraulic jacks 30 also provide a compressive force on the roof strata to improve the strength of the anchoring of the pin. The piston is preferably in two parts, the upper having a depression 23 to receive the head 46 of pin 44 and a ring 24 to wipe the cylinder, the upper and lower parts having sealing piston rings 25. A switch 41 prevents operation of the pin setting piston until the device is positioned securely between floor 12 and roof 11. |
