The cleaning process is effected manually or automatically. Erfindungsgemäß wird ein Steuergerät für einen Speicherkat eines Kraftfahrzeugs zur Steuerung und Überwachung des zyklischen Reinigungsvorgangs vorgeschlagen. Das Steuergerät (1) ist dabei mit einem Navigationsgerät (3) verbunden, in dem die Daten für die aktuelle Fahrtroute gespeichert sind. Vor der Reinigungsprozedur prüft das Steuergerät (1) anhand der bekannten Fahrtroute, zu welchem Zeitpunkt und welchem Ort eine Reinigung des Speicherkats (8) durchgeführt werden kann.
