Zur Verminderung des Entstehens von Koagulat und Wandbelägen in metallischen Polymerisationsreaktoren bei der radikalisch initiierten Emulsionspolymerisation von olefinisch ungesättigten Monomeren bei einer Polymeriastionstemperatur von 35 bis 120 DEG C wird ein direktes Erhitzen der Reaktionsmischung auf Polymerisationstemperatur über metallische Wärmeaustauschflächen im Polymerisationsreaktor vermieden und statt dessen das Erhitzen im Polymerisationsreaktor durch Zugabe von erhitztem Wasser und/oder durch Einleiten von Wasserdampf durch den Reaktorboden durchgeführt. Das Verfahren erspart Reinigungskosten und verbessert die zeitliche Nutzungsmöglichkeit des Reaktors.
