The claimed production is by radically grafting the silanes onto the polyethylene prior to melt spinning, with addition of a plasticising oil before and/or after such grafting, and then carrying out both catalytic hydrolysis and the subsequent polycondensation after the melt spinning, eg during or after bonding of fleece made from the fibres. Preferably the functionalised silanes are alkoxyvinylsilanes such as vinyl tri(m)ethoxysilane and grafting is effected in an extruder using an organic peroxide with a high active oxygen content. The plasticising oil is paraffin oil at 15-30 wt.%. The hydrolysis and subsequent polycondensation are effected using an aqueous preparation or atmospheric moisture, either directly after the melt spinning or after a subsequent operation on the melt-spun fibres. Gel content (a measure of the degree of crosslinking) is 55 wt% or higher.</description><edition>6</edition><language>eng ; ger</language><subject>APPARATUS SPECIALLY ADAPTED FOR THE MANUFACTURE OF CARBONFILAMENTS ; BRAIDING ; CHEMICAL FEATURES IN THE MANUFACTURE OF ARTIFICIAL FILAMENTS,THREADS, FIBRES, BRISTLES OR RIBBONS ; CHEMISTRY ; COMPOSITIONS BASED THEREON ; COMPOSITIONS OF MACROMOLECULAR COMPOUNDS ; COTTON-WOOL ; FABRICS MADE BY SUCH PROCESSES OR APPARATUS, e.g. FELTS,NON-WOVEN FABRICS ; KNITTING ; LACE-MAKING ; MAKING TEXTILE FABRICS, e.g. FROM FIBRES OR FILAMENTARYMATERIAL ; METALLURGY ; NATURAL OR ARTIFICIAL THREADS OR FIBRES ; NON-WOVEN FABRICS ; ORGANIC MACROMOLECULAR COMPOUNDS ; SPINNING ; TEXTILES ; THEIR PREPARATION OR CHEMICAL WORKING-UP ; TRIMMINGS ; WADDING</subject><creationdate>1997</creationdate><oa>free_for_read</oa><woscitedreferencessubscribed>false</woscitedreferencessubscribed></display><links><openurl>$$Topenurl_article</openurl><openurlfulltext>$$Topenurlfull_article</openurlfulltext><thumbnail>$$Tsyndetics_thumb_exl</thumbnail><linktohtml>$$Uhttps://worldwide.espacenet.com/publicationDetails/biblio?FT=D&amp;date=19970918&amp;DB=EPODOC&amp;CC=DE&amp;NR=19609419A1$$EHTML$$P50$$Gepo$$Hfree_for_read</linktohtml><link.rule.ids>230,308,780,885,25562,76317</link.rule.ids><linktorsrc>$$Uhttps://worldwide.espacenet.com/publicationDetails/biblio?FT=D&amp;date=19970918&amp;DB=EPODOC&amp;CC=DE&amp;NR=19609419A1$$EView_record_in_European_Patent_Office$$FView_record_in_$$GEuropean_Patent_Office$$Hfree_for_read</linktorsrc></links><search><creatorcontrib>SCHAUER, GOTTFRIED., 01217 DRESDEN, DE</creatorcontrib><creatorcontrib>SCHMACK, GERHILT., 01109 DRESDEN, DE</creatorcontrib><creatorcontrib>BEYREUTHER, ROLAND, DR., 01309 DRESDEN, DE</creatorcontrib><creatorcontrib>VOGEL, ROLAND., 01219 DRESDEN, DE</creatorcontrib><title>Crosslinked, heat-stable melt-spun polyethylene fibres useful in fleece</title><description>Melt-spun elastic fibres of polyethylene having a side-chain structure and a narrow Mw / Mn ratio of &lt;= 2.2 are characterised in that functionalised organosilanes grafted to the polymer- and/or side-chain are hydrolysed to give silanols which are then polycondensed to give crosslinking consisting of Si-O-Si bridges.
