Prepn of iso or tere-phthalonitrile by reaction - of iso or terephthalic acid with ammonia

Reaction is effected at 360-420 degrees C in a vertical bed using a dehydration catalyst which is maintained in a fluid state with an ammonia gas stream and the iso- or tere-phthalic acid is introduced with the aid of a pulsating inert gas stream, e.g. nitrogen, which may contain 10-30% of oxygen.
