The individual asbestos particles in the body are welded together by the metal or metal oxide coatings on the particles. One example describes impregnating asbestos-felt with magnesium nitrate which is decomposed to magnesium oxide, and compressed by sintering under pressure to form a filter. Another example describes the production of an electrically conductive felt by impregnating the felt with silver nitrate which is decomposed to metallic silver. The mechanical properties of the asbestos felt may be modified by pulverising the treated asbestos and simultaneously compressing and sintering to produce moulded articles.
