description 1,160,304. Esters of pentaerythritol. GEIGY (U.K.) Ltd. 18 Dec., 1967 [6 Jan., 1967], No. 909/67. Heading C2C. [Also in Division C5] Pentaerythritol esters derived from a mixture of straight- and branched-chain aliphatic monocarboxylic acids, characterized in that the mean number of carbon atoms in the acid mixture is within the range of from 7À3 to 8À5 and the percentage of carbon atoms contributed by the straight chain acids is greater than 60% of the mean carbon number, may be prepared by heating a mixture of the pentaerythritol and acid reactants under reflux and removing the water formed. An excess amount of the acid mixture is preferred. Suitable straight-chain monocarboxylic acids include n-valeric acid, nhexoic acid, n-heptoic acid, caprylic acid and pelargonic acid or mixtures of two or more thereof, and suitable branched chain monocarboxylic acids include methyl butyric acid, methyl valeric acid, 2-ethylhexoic acid and isooctanoic acid. Examples describe the preparation of esters of pentaerythritol from a mixture of 2-ethylhexoic acid, n-heptoic acid and caprylic acid.
