description Glass fibres are treated with a composition comprising a polyvalent metal salt and a phenol, a phenolic acid or a mixture thereof, to improve their receptivity for synthetic resinous materials. The polyvalent metal salt may be ferric chloride, ferrous sulphate, ferric sulphate, ferrous bromide, cobalt chloride, aluminium chloride or chromic chloride and the phenolic acid may be salicylic acid or parahydroxy benzoic acid. The composition, which may be applied from an aqueous or organic solvent medium, may also contain a polymer, copolymer or heteropolymer of an acrylate, methacrylate, styrene, vinyl acetate, vinyl chloride, vinylidene chloride or butadiene, a lubricant, e.g. an amide formed from a mono- or dibasic fatty acid and a polyethylene amine and solubilized with acetic, methacrylic or acrylic acid, and polyvinyl pyrrolidone and may have a pH of 3-7. The composition may be applied to the fibres as they are drawn from the bushing and the fibres may subsequently be used to reinforce laminates and moulded articles made from polyester or epoxy resins. The laminating or moulding resins may contain a silane, e.g. vinyltriethoxy silane, mono- or di-methoxy vinyl silane, di- or trimethoxy allyl silane, di- or tri-ethoxy allyl silane, diallyl methyl ethoxy silane and silanes containing aryloxy and haloradicals.
