The speed of tape 1 is similarly controlled by motor 7 or the tape drive shaft 9 may be coupled through suitable gearing to motor 5. Synchronizing pulses from pick-up head 16 control a free running camera 18 which supplies video and synch. signals for recording in oblique tracks on the tape 1. The synch. pulses may also be recorded by head 24 on a separate track on the tape and, where the speed control is exercised by a servo system, may be applied at terminal 20 to the system as an actual speed reference signal. One revolution of the rotating member 14 is effected in a period which is a multiple of the frame period and where the multiple is odd faulty interlacing is prevented by recording twice the number of synch. marks required during one revolution of the member and following the pick-up head 16 with a " divide by two " circuit. The method of recording the marks on the rotating member is also described.
