The method involves controlling and positioning the safety devices (2) in an active position depending on a collision, particularly a lateral collision, that is imminent to the vehicle (1) and is determined by detected signals (S) of environmental detection and a current vehicle position (P). The vehicle condition data (F) detected by a vehicle condition detection is considered during the determination of the imminent collision. A road category, on which the vehicle is currently located, is determined as the vehicle position.
