Use of ether-sulfate compounds with a low inorganic salt content as emulsifiers for emulsion polymerisation, especially for production of aqueous polymer lattices with good freeze-thaw stability
The use of ether sulfates containing less than 2000 ppm mono- or di-valent metal sulfate or chloride (in 30 wt% aqueous solution) as emulsifiers for emulsion polymerisation. The use of ether-sulfates of formula (Ia) or (Ib) as emulsifiers for emulsion polymerisation. R-(OCH2CH2)n-OSO3Me (Ia); (R-(OC...

Zusammenfassung: | The use of ether sulfates containing less than 2000 ppm mono- or di-valent metal sulfate or chloride (in 30 wt% aqueous solution) as emulsifiers for emulsion polymerisation. The use of ether-sulfates of formula (Ia) or (Ib) as emulsifiers for emulsion polymerisation. R-(OCH2CH2)n-OSO3Me (Ia); (R-(OCH2CH2)n-OSO3)2Mz (Ib); R = 8-22C alkyl, aryl or aralkyl (with optionally unsaturated, linear or branched alkyl groups); n = 2-50; Me = a monovalent inorganic cation; Mz = a divalent inorganic cation. An available, 30 wt.% aqueous solution of (Ia/Ib) contains less than 2000 ppm inorganic salts of formula Me2SO4, MeCl, MzSO4 and MzCl2.
The invention relates to ether sulfates of general formulas (Ia): R-(O-CH2-CH2)n-OSO3Me, and (Ib): [R-(O-CH2-CH2)n-OSO3]2Mz ] wherein; radical R represents an alkyl radical, aryl radical or an alkaryl radical having a total of 8 to 22 carbon atoms, whereby the alkyl radical can be saturated or unsaturated and unbranched or branched; n represents a number ranging from 2 to 50; Me represents a monovalent inorganic cation, and; Mz represents a bivalent inorganic cation, whereby a 30 wt. % aqueous supplied form of the ether sulfates has, in total, less than 2000 ppm - with regard to the total composition of inorganic salts of formulas Me2SO4, MeCl, MzSO4 and MzCl2. These ether sulfates are suited for use as emulsifiers for emulsion polymerization. Aqueous lattices which are obtained by emulsion polymerization while using these ether sulfates, which have a reduced salt content compared to that of conventional ether sulfates, are characterized by having an improved freezing-thawing stability and a reduced coagulate and/or fine coagulate portion.
