Die Erfindung betrifft eine Insassenschutzvorrichtung eines Fahrzeugs mit einem Airbagmodul (2), das hinter einem Wandbereich vorzugsweise einer Lenkradnabe (1) angeordnet ist und mindestens einen zusammengefalteten mittels eines Gasgenerators (3) und nachgeordneten Diffusors (4) aufblasbaren Airbag (5) enthält. Eine Abdeckplatte (10) deckt eine Austrittsöffnung im Wandbereich ab und ist bei aktiviertem Airbag (5) abhebbar. Erfindungsgemäß ist der Diffusor (4) teleskopierbar ausgebildet und umfaßt zwei Teleskoprohre (6, 8) mit radial gerichteten Ausströmöffnungen (7, 9). Die Ausströmöffnungen sind so angeordnet, dass sie jeweils gemäß einem aktuellen Teleskopierweg abgedeckt oder freigegeben sind, so dass ein jeweils zugeordneter Aufblasvorgang des umgebenden Airbags (5) möglich ist. In einer Weiterbildung ist die Abdeckplatte (10) mit der Oberseite des ausschiebbaren Teleskoprohrs (8) verbunden, wodurch eine vorbestimmte und kontrollierte Abhebebewegung der Abdeckplatte (10) erreicht wird.
