The alcohol formed is removed, the reaction mixt.is recycled into the reactor, and this is repeated until the molar ratio of monocarboxylic acid:Al has reached 0.95-1.05, and of water:Al has reached 0.9-1.0, and the prod. is finally freed from alcohol. R = 2-5C alkyl.
