Zusammenfassung:2,4-Dioxohexahydro-1,3,5-triazine is obtained, avoiding unwanted by-products, by reacting formaldehyde, or compounds which donate formaldehyde, with urea. The urea is used in an amount such that the molar ratio of formaldehyde to urea in the reaction mixture is from 1:2.1 to 1:4.5. Reaction is carried out from 100 to 300 DEG C. The compound is used, for example, for the preparation of compounds having bactericidal and fungicidal properties, and for the preparation of polymers having high thermal stability. It is also suitable as a slow-acting nitrogen fertilizer.
