A winnower device (48) infeeds the tobacco material into the duct adjacent the throat (26) of a venturi section (12) connected to the inlet of the conveying duct. A tangential separator (18) with an adjustable baffle (80) at the inlet thereof for controlling velocity in the separator is used to separate the expanded tobacco from the gaseous medium.
