Zusammenfassung:	A fuel cell system (1) has the following components: - at least one fuel cell (2) which has an anode region (3) and a cathode region (4); a burner (10) for burning exhaust gases from the fuel cell (2) and additional fuel which can be optionally supplied; a storage volume (17) for temporarily storing exhaust gases which flow continuously or discontinuously out of the anode region (3) of the fuel cell (2) via a valve device (14), wherein the storage volume (17) is arranged between the anode region (3) and the burner (10). According to the invention, the hot exhaust gases of the burner (1) are expanded in an expansion apparatus (12). A solution according to the method makes provision for operation of a fuel cell system of this kind to be operated with an additional valve device (18) behind the storage volume (17).
