A method for applying a fluid having magnetic characteristics to a carrier tape in uniform parallel strips uniformly spaced apart and of symmetrical cross-section. The strips are applied to the carrier tape by deposition from a toothed rotatable cylindrical body. Fluid layers on the peripheral surfaces of the teeth contact the tape with the teeth moving at a higher rate of travel than the moving carrier tape. The teeth deposit the fluid in the spaced strips on the tape surface without contact between the peripheral tooth surface and the tape surface and in such a manner that the deposited strip assumes a symmetrical cross-section.
