In a gas-scrubber gas entering at 3 a chamber 1 containing a body of scrubbing liquid and impinges on the surface of the liquid before passing upwardly with entrained liquid through a divergent conduit 8 into a zone 9 where entrained liquid is separated and scrubbed gas leaves at 10, the lower portion 2 of the chamber 1 being connected by a pipe 14 to an equalising tank 13 also containing scrubbing liquid, the upper portion of the tank being connected by a pipe 15 to atmosphere or as shown to the gas outlet 10 and the cross-sectional area of the tank 13 being at its liquid level 17 smaller than the cross-sectional area of the chamber 1 at its liquid level 18. Powdered lime may be added to liquid in the tank 13 under control of a pH of liquid separated in zone 9 and passing by a pipe 12 to a sludge-settling tank 25. In a modification gas leaving divergent conduit impinges on the surface of a second body of liquid and then through a second divergent conduit. The second body of liquid is also connected to an equalising tank.
