The reciprocation of an axially reciprocable ink distributing roller 1 derives from a vertically mounted worm-driven hollow shaft 5 fixed within an eccentric collar 10 which is mounted for rotation in a horizontally slidable member 12 connected to one end of the roller shaft 14. The amplitude of reciprocation is adjusted by displacement of the shaft 5 diametrically within the collar 10 such displacement being effected by the vertical movement within the shaft 5 of a key 7 having inclined surfaces 8 which coact with opposed cotter parts 9 by which the shaft 5 and the collar are connected. Simultaneous adjustment of the shaft speed and movement of the key 7 is effected through rotation of a hand wheel 28 which displaces the key via a lever 25 whilst altering the output of a variable gear-box 16 through a lever 27. In a modified apparatus two hand wheels are provided, one for each adjustment whilst in yet another structure only stepless adjustment of the amplitude is possible the shaft speed being adjustable to one of two predetermined values.
