description | 901,862. Making perforating rolls. OLIN MATHIESON CHEMICAL CORPORATION. Dec. 19, 1960 [Dec. 18, 1959], No. 43595/60. Class 83 (2). [Also in Group VIII] A method of making perforated rolls comprises assembling a plurality of metallic (e.g. aluminium) washers 18, 23, Fig. 6, and a metal (e.g. steel) wire 20 on a shaft 11 so as to form a laminated roll in which the wire is sandwiched between alternate washers, and selectively removing parts of the surface of the roll so as to expose a circumferential array of pins 31, Fig. 8, projecing radially from the roll. The washers 23, before assembly, are machined with notches 21, 22, Fig. 3, and wound with the wire 20 which encircles the washers and engages the notches. The wound washers are then coated by being immersed in a bath of resinous material. The washers 18 are plain. After assembly, the roll has applied thereto a grinding wheel 28 which removes the notches 21 and that portion of the wire disposed therein. The roll is then immersed in an etching bath 35 which selectively removes a circumferential margin of the roll so as to expose the pins 31. The resinous material 32 between the pins is removed, e.g. by brushing. |
