description | 1344541 Laminate CANADIAN INTERNATIONAL PAPER CO 11 Jan 1971 [12 Jan 1970] 961/71 Heading B5N A laminate suitable for use as towelling comprises a pair of creped tissue webs, each having a basis weight of 9 to 16 lbs. per ream and a crepe ratio of between 1À2 and 1À5 and each having substantially parallel lines of creping and having portions of the surface raised with respect to other portions, said webs being superposed with their lines of creping parallel and being bonded by an adhesive disposed between the web in a pattern which leaves substantial unbounded regions while each web being in a different condition of stress in the plane of the web perpendicular to the lines of creping the raised portions on each web opposing those on the other. The webs are preferably embossed prior to bonding. The adhesive, e.g. polyvinyl alcohol, may be in aligned spots, which may be smaller in regions of greater concentration of spots, and which may form a guilt pattern. The laminate may be made by drawing tissue webs 10, 9 over tensioning rolls 15, 16 and thence into respective nips of embossing rolls 12 and 13, 18 and 19. The adhesive is applied in a pattern to web 10 from roller 24 having rubber impression mat 27 on its surface and the webs are then bonded in the nip of rolls 28, 30, the latter carrying a mat 31 corresponding to that on roll 24 so that pressure is restricted to the adhesive areas. The speeds of the unwind stands 5, 6 embossing rolls 12, 13, 18, 19 and laminating rolls 28, 30 are adjusted in order that the webs are united at different tensions. After lamination the tension is relaxed so that one of the webs has a greater area than the other in the unbonded region and thus buckles and improves the hand of the product. The thickness of the laminate is such that 130 sheets each 10 inches long produce a roll 5¥ inches in diameter when wound on a 1¢ inch diameter core. |
