description | 1369124 Seedling plugs RESEARCH COUNCIL OF ALBERTA 20 June 1972 [28 June 1971] 28812/72 Heading A1E A seedling plug is formed by mixing peat having a Van Post rank of 1-3 with between 60 and 95% by weight of water, compressing and extruding it into a plastics tube, and slicing it into lengths, the resulting plug 13 having dry weight/wet volume density of between 0.08 and 0.4. Preferably between 70 and 85% by weight of water is used giving a plug with a dry weight/wet volume density of between 0.13 and 0.25. The extrusion apparatus comprises: a screw 1 with a varied flight lead to give a compression ratio of 2 or 3:1, an electric motor 3, a hopper 7 for the peat mixture, and a head 5 and nozzle 7 coated with polytetrafluoroethylene. A 15 foot long, 1 mil thick, 1 inch diameter polyethene tube 9 is threaded onto the nozzle 6, and the peat mixture extruded into the tube. The resulting rod is sliced into 3 inch lengths by a gang cutter. |
