The composite material (20) includes regions that differ in one or more properties. The composite material may include two regions (24), (26) that differ with respect to one or more (e.g., all) of the following properties: tensile strength, thickness, or density. The composite material generally includes a first metallic sheet (12), a second metallic: sheet (12); one or more metallic inserts (22) interposed between the first metallic sheet (12) and the second metallic sheet (12); and a polymeric layer (e,g, a core layer (15) interposed between the first metallic sheet (12) and the second 'metallic sheet (12). The polymeric layer preferably: Includes a thermoplastic polymer (9). The composite material Includes a first region (24) having an insert (22) interposed between the metallic sheets (12) so that the first region (24) (relative to the second region (26) has a high tensile strength, a high thickness, a high density, or any combination thereof.
