In order th at the mail items can still be identified reliably even after a cancellation in print or a forwarding sticker has been applied, it is proposed that the control unit (38) is provided for carrying out the assignment with the aid o f an identification code (14, 22, 48, 62-68, 76, 78) associated with the mai l item (16, 26-34, 70-74).
