CALENDERED INDUSTRIAL PROCESS FABRIC

A method of manufacturing a smoothed and durable industrial process fabric with a smoother, more planar, permanently deformed surface that is created without the removal, such as by grinding or sanding, of any material from the surface during manufacture. The fabric may be used as a papermaker's fabric, other industrial process and/or engineered fabric. The fabric is processed using a device comprising at least two smooth rolls which form a pressure nip, such as a calender, such that at least some of the fabric components are permanently deformed by the application of gap-based calendering to the fabric with the rolls being set to a pre-selected gap width. Preferably, at least one of the rolls is heated to a pre-selected temperature. The application of gap-based calendering results in an industrial process fabric with less fabric deformation than a fabric manufactured with load-based calendering.
