description 1450945 Hydrorefining oils SHELL INTERNATIONALE RESEARCH MAATSCHAPPIJ BV 7 Nov 1973 [9 Nov 1972] 51625/73 Heading C5E White oils are produced by treating a hydrocarbon feed with hydrogen at 275-375‹ C. in the presence of a fluorine-containing sulphidic catalyst comprising Ni and/or Co and, in addition, Mo and/or W on a carrier and in which at least part of the fluorine has been incorporated by in-situ fluorination and topping off light components; less than 30 wt. per cent of the feedstock being converted to components having boiling points lower than the initial boiling point of the feed. The feed can be an atmospheric or vacuum distillate of a crude oil, or a raffinate obtained by treating a distillate with an aromatics-selective solvent, and can be solvent dewaxed. Part of the fluorine content of the catalyst can be incorporated by impregnation and fluorine-containing compounds can be included in the feed to the hydrogenation process. The catalyst can be sulphided with a mixture of hydrogen together with hydrogen sulphide, carbon disulphide, mercaptans, or sulphur-containing kerosine or gas oil. The catalyst carrier is suitably alumina and can contain phosphate or boron.
