The amount of organic matter and the temperature of the zone are such as to cause an enothermic reaction to occur in the mixture and to heat the metal produced to at least its melting point the initial temperature of the zone being below the said melting point. The reaction mixture may be compacted and formed into plastic envelopes. Alternatively it may be fed to the furnace as a viscous stream or slurry The organic material may be liquid such as oil, or solid, such as coal, or organic waste products may be used. The production of iron, cobalt, nickel, manganese, tungsten, gold, silver, vanadium titanium, chromium, copper, molybdenum and platinum is referred to.
