1315430 Antibacterial and antifungal antibiotic compositions ELI LILLY & CO 23 Dec 1971 [24 Dec 1970 12 Oct 1971] 60114/71 Headings A5B and ASE [Also in Division C2] The antibiotics A-201A and A-201B (see Division C2) have an inhibitory action against bacteria and fungi which are pathogenic to animal and plant life. Bacterial or fungal growth can be inhibited by administering to the host or site of the bacteria or fungi an effective amount of antibiotic A-201A or A- 201B or of a composition containing such an antibiotic. The antibiotic A-201A may be administered by subcutaneous injection to chickens infected with Mycoplasma gallisepticum. The same antibiotic may be administered orally to treat rats infected with Entamoeba histolytica. A mixture of antibiotics A-201A and A-201B may be administered intraperitoneally to control Borrelia novyi infections in mice. Other micro-organisms controlled by subcutaneous injection to mice are Staphylococcus aureus Diplococcus pneumoniae and Streptococcus pyogenes. Antibiotic A-201A is effective in inhibiting the growth of microorganisms which contribute to the development of periodontal disease. Also, antibiotic A-201A is effective in promoting growth in animals. A-201A may be injected into swine infected with Pasteurella spp. or added to the animals feed or water supply. Antibiotic A- 201B may be added to foliar spray compositions commonly applied to pear trees for the treatment and control of Erwinia amylovora (Fire Blight of pear). A-201B may be used to control fungi such as Botrytis cinerea which infects a variety of ornamental and crop plants.
