Zusammenfassung:The escalator has a safety device which slows the escalator (10) down, when misuse of the hand rail (12) is detected. The device includes a sensor (20,22) mounted on the outside of the escalator which monitors to see whether any object is sticking out from the outside of the escalator, in which case it turns off the escalator and/or sets of an alarm. Preferably one sensor (22) directs a beam (26) upwards and on the outer side of the escalator, just below the handrail. The other sensor (20) directs a beam (24) up to just below the hand rail near the point where a person gets on the escalator. Ultrasonic sensors may be used.
