Zusammenfassung:Major trends in developing methods of machine assignment of subject indexes are examined. Two approaches are discernible: (a) the use of subject descriptors based on key words extracted from the document (usually from the title); (b) the use of predetermined subject categories under which documents are indexed. It is noted that the systems that rely on statistical characteristics of the appearance of key words in the documents are the more promising.
