By taking sorne elements of dynamics from a basic university physics course, it is formulated and them sol ved a problem that should help to understand the mechanism of ti des. The problem propases the calculation of the gravitatory perturbation of the moon on the terrestrial surface in three different simple situations, thus perrnitting identify and understand the so called "tidal forces". Sorne arguments, useful for the physics teachers, are also discussed.
