Based on official statistical data and secondary sources, we introduce the tourism activity in the region and its socioeconomic impact.Finally, revised data raise evidence of the most characteristic features of the regional tourism model. Arequipa es uno de los destinos turísticos más importantes del sur andino.La ciudad de Arequipa, capital de esta región, presenta un importante patrimonio arquitectónico colonial, como iglesias, conventos y edificios históricos de gran belleza, particularmente el monasterio de Santa Catalina y la Catedral.El impresionante valle del Colca, con su famoso cañón, su arquitectura colonial y sus poblados rurales enriquecen el espacio turístico de Arequipa,siendo actualmente el principal destino turístico de la región.El objetivo de este artículo es analizar el espacio regional de Arequipa en el contexto del crecimiento turístico y su contribución como motor de desarrollo de la región. A partir de datos estadísticos oficiales y fuentes secundarias,se define el espacio turístico de Arequipa y su entorno socio económico. Finalmente, los datos ponen en evidencia los rasgos más característicos del modelo turístico regional.
