description | AIMS: To evaluate the risk of developing type 2 diabetes mellitus in bank employees of the city of Tubarao, Santa Catarina state, Brazil.
METHODS: Through a cross-sectional study, all the bank employees that worked in the agencies of Tubarao were eligible for inclusion. The questionnaire Diabetes Risk Score for determination of the risk of developing Type 2 diabetes mellitus in 10 years was used, and the risk was classified as low, some high, moderate, high and very high. The statistical tests were chi-square and ANOVA with significance level of 5%.
RESULTS: A total of 263 bank employees were included, representing a response rate of 96.3%. The risk of developing type 2 diabetes mellitus was low in 128 (48.7%), some high in 101 (38.4%), moderate in 24 (9.1%) and high in 10 (3.8%) . Workers with partners had a higher prevalence of low (45.3%), moderate (10.1%) and high (4.5%) risk, and men had a higher prevalence of moderate (11%) and high (6 , 6%) risk. The longer the time exerted in the profession and in the current function, the greater the risk of diabetes. In workers at high risk, the average working time as a bank employee was 18.59±11.48 years and in their current function, 9.42 ± 9.09 years (p less than 0.05). No significant associations were found on ethnicity, educational level and job function with the risk of diabetes.
CONCLUSIONS: Bank employees of the city of Tubarao have risk of developing type 2 diabetes over 10 years and this risk tends to increase the longer their profession. Preventive measures are necessary to improve the quality of life of employees, as well as reducing the risk of developing type 2 diabetes mellitus. |
