Zusammenfassung: | We explored the relationship between two types of play behavior and measures of nutritional status (i.e., weight gain, feeding behavior, and drinking behavior) in weaner pigs. Our study demonstrated that motivation to play is higher when animals are in more stable conditions, e.g., well-nourished, and healthier than under suboptimal conditions.
The present study titled "Play behaviour positively relates to weight gain, feeding behaviour and drinking behaviour in weaner pigs (Sus scrofa)" and submitted to Applied Animal Behaviour Science on October 25, 2022 was conducted from February to November 2020 at the experimental facilities at the Department of Animal and Veterinary Sciences, Aarhus University, Viborg, Denmark. The experimental procedures were carried out in accordance with the Ministry of Food, Agriculture and Fisheries, The Danish Veterinary and Food Administration under act 474 of 15. May 2014 and executive order 2028 of 14. December 2020, and under consideration of the ARRIVE Guidelines (Du Sert et al., 2020).
