Contamination of Dioxins and PCBs in Fish in Tokyo Bay

The contamination level of polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins (PCDII), polychlorinated dibenzofurans (PCDF), coplanar polychlorinated biphenyls (Co-PCB) and total PCB (PCBs) in fish, plankton, water and sediment samples from the administrated area of Tokyo Metropolitan Government in Tokyo bay were an...

The range of concentrations of PCDD/DF and Co-PCB, and PCBs in the fishes were 4.5-18 pg-TEQ/g-wet and &lt;100-460 ng/g-wet, respectively. The contamination level was considerably higher than other parts of Japan. Co-PCB accounted for 70-92 % based on TEQ in fish and plankton, and these ratio of Co-PCB were especially high. The isomer pattern of Co-PCB in each sample is similar to that of technical PCB product. The relation between concentrations of PCBs and Co-PCB in fish was observed. The isomer and homologue patterns of PCDD/DF in the sediments suggested that the contamination derived from herbicides and technical PCBs as well as combustion. The distribution of PCDD/DF Co-PCB and PCBs indicated that the contamination of Tokyo bay is due to transport and sedimentation caused by river inflows.</description><identifier>ISSN: 0917-2408</identifier><identifier>EISSN: 1882-5818</identifier><identifier>DOI: 10.5985/jec.12.343</identifier><language>eng</language><publisher>Japan Society for Environmental Chemistry</publisher><subject>coplaner PCB ; dioxin ; fish ; PCBs ; Tokyo Bay</subject><ispartof>Journal of Environmental Chemistry, 2002/06/26, Vol.12(2), pp.343-352</ispartof><rights>Japan Society for Environmental Chemistry</rights><oa>free_for_read</oa><woscitedreferencessubscribed>false</woscitedreferencessubscribed><citedby>FETCH-LOGICAL-c2293-aec8f92f1f1c59e89058831a3c01e9a2ac808daf2148102c9959d19a2e076ac83</citedby></display><links><openurl>$$Topenurl_article</openurl><openurlfulltext>$$Topenurlfull_article</openurlfulltext><thumbnail>$$Tsyndetics_thumb_exl</thumbnail><link.rule.ids>314,780,784,1883,4024,27923,27924,27925</link.rule.ids></links><search><creatorcontrib>IIMURA, Fuminari</creatorcontrib><creatorcontrib>SASAKI, Yuko</creatorcontrib><creatorcontrib>TSUKUI, Takaaki</creatorcontrib><creatorcontrib>YOSHIOKA, Hidetoshi</creatorcontrib><creatorcontrib>HIGASHINO, Kazuo</creatorcontrib><creatorcontrib>TAKEDA, Yoshihito</creatorcontrib><creatorcontrib>KASSAI, Kouji</creatorcontrib><title>Contamination of Dioxins and PCBs in Fish in Tokyo Bay</title><title>Journal of Environmental Chemistry</title><addtitle>JEC</addtitle><description>The contamination level of polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins (PCDII), polychlorinated dibenzofurans (PCDF), coplanar polychlorinated biphenyls (Co-PCB) and total PCB (PCBs) in fish, plankton, water and sediment samples from the administrated area of Tokyo Metropolitan Government in Tokyo bay were analyzed, and the sources and the transport of these chemicals were investigated.
