Characteristics and preservation of semen of beijing black and reproductive performance of the sows

A study was carried out to investigate the characteristics of Beijing Black boars, the preservation of liquid semen by a Kiev extender at 15°C, the preservation of frozen semen in straws and the subsequent reproductive performance of Beijing Black sows. Four boars were prepared for the semen investigation, and 6 sows (10 litters) were examined for reproductive performance. Additionally, Duroc, Landrace and Large White boars or Landrace sows were used as controls. With regard to semen characteristics, the mean semen volume of Beijing Black boars tended to be less than that of the controls (203.0±66.5ml vs 224.3±52.7ml). The mean sperm motility was lower than that of the controls (P
