description A indicate system, which includes three subsystems of urban-rural economic, social and ecological integration, is constructed to assess the development level of urban-rural integration in 16 core cities in the Yangtze River Delta from 2006 to 2021 through the entropy method, in order to analyze their spatiotemporal evolution characteristics, and explore the main barrier factors hindering the development of urban-rural integration. The results showed that the development level of subsystem had greatly improved, eventually forming the regional distribution characteristic of "Shanghai>Jiangsu>Zhejiang" and the spatial distribution pattern of " high in the north and low in the south". Industrial structure, spatial connection and environmental treatment were the main barrier layers of urban-rural ESE integration, and ratio of primary industry employment to secondary and tertiary industry employment, land urbanization rate, comprehensive utilization rate of livestock and poultry manure, and ratio of villages handling domestic waste were its main barrier factors.
