The pseudo-Stark shift in the optical frequency of the 4 F 9/2 – 4 I 15/2 transition of an Er 3+ ion in a Y 2 SiO 5 matrix under the action of a weak pulsed electric field is measured from changes in the amplitude and temporal shape of the photon echo.
