32.2: High Birefringence and Low Viscosity LC Mixtures

In this paper, we described some isothiocyanato tolane liquid crystals (LCs) that exhibit a high birefringence and reasonably low viscosity. We evaluated the phase transition temperatures, birefringence (Δn) and visco‐elastic coefficient of several high birefringence isothiocyanato tolane compounds. Using these compounds, we have formulated eutectic mixtures that exhibit a wide nematic range, high birefringence and low viscosity. We reported the temperature‐dependent birefringence and viscoelastic coefficient of these eutectic mixtures.
