Reverberation time and audibility in phased geometrical acoustics using plane or spherical wave reflection coefficients

Room acoustics parameters are typically predicted using some form of geometrical acoustics for large rooms. For smaller rooms, phased geometrical acoustics improves results for lower frequencies. The use of a spherical wave reflection coefficient improves the results further, yet the exact impact on...

This work predicts the reverberation time in medium-sized rooms (27 m3 &lt; V &lt; 300 m3) using phased geometrical acoustics. The difference between the use of plane and spherical wave reflection modeling is analyzed for a variety of boundary conditions, including non-uniform distribution of absorption. Since calculated differences are greater than the conventional just-noticeable-difference of 5% for reverberation time, laboratory listening tests are performed to confirm audibility of the modeled differences. Two narrow band noise stimuli (octave bands with central frequency 125 and 250 Hz) with a duration of 1 s were used for comparisons of 18 acoustic scenarios by means of a three-alternative forced choice method. More than half of the listeners could hear the differences in all 36 cases. Statistically significant results (chi-squared test was used) were found in two-thirds of the cases, corresponding to those with longer reverberation times.</description><identifier>ISSN: 0001-4966</identifier><identifier>EISSN: 1520-8524</identifier><identifier>DOI: 10.1121/1.5095862</identifier><identifier>PMID: 31046364</identifier><identifier>CODEN: JASMAN</identifier><language>eng</language><publisher>United States</publisher><ispartof>The Journal of the Acoustical Society of America, 2019-04, Vol.145 (4), p.2681-2690</ispartof><rights>Acoustical Society of America</rights><lds50>peer_reviewed</lds50><oa>free_for_read</oa><woscitedreferencessubscribed>false</woscitedreferencessubscribed><citedby>FETCH-LOGICAL-c390t-c8081615c18e1caafca39dc14797f879d3652ae709c7c9f4787e0e3f620b3fb53</citedby><cites>FETCH-LOGICAL-c390t-c8081615c18e1caafca39dc14797f879d3652ae709c7c9f4787e0e3f620b3fb53</cites></display><links><openurl>$$Topenurl_article</openurl><openurlfulltext>$$Topenurlfull_article</openurlfulltext><thumbnail>$$Tsyndetics_thumb_exl</thumbnail><linktohtml>$$Uhttps://pubs.aip.org/jasa/article-lookup/doi/10.1121/1.5095862$$EHTML$$P50$$Gscitation$$H</linktohtml><link.rule.ids>207,208,314,780,784,794,1565,4512,27924,27925,76384</link.rule.ids><backlink>$$Uhttps://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/31046364$$D View this record in MEDLINE/PubMed$$Hfree_for_read</backlink></links><search><creatorcontrib>Boucher, Matthew A.</creatorcontrib><creatorcontrib>Rychtarikova, Monika</creatorcontrib><creatorcontrib>Zelem, Lukáš</creatorcontrib><creatorcontrib>Pluymers, Bert</creatorcontrib><creatorcontrib>Desmet, Wim</creatorcontrib><title>Reverberation time and audibility in phased geometrical acoustics using plane or spherical wave reflection coefficients</title><title>The Journal of the Acoustical Society of America</title><addtitle>J Acoust Soc Am</addtitle><description>Room acoustics parameters are typically predicted using some form of geometrical acoustics for large rooms.
