Shot Noise in 3c 273

The underlying impulse sequence responsible for the optical variability displayed by 3C 273 is presented. The sequence is random and consistent with a shot-noise process in which the mean rate of events is 8 yr/sup -1/. The implication of the result for proposed physical models is briefly discussed....
