168 undergraduates completed the Body Acceptance By Others Scale (BAOS), Sociocultural Attitudes Toward Appearance Questionnaire-3 (SATAQ-3; Internalization-Total and -General, -Athletic subscales), and Intuitive Eating Scale (IES).
Internalization-Total mediated the relationship between BAOS and IES (b=.19, p<.001). Internalization-General was a significant mediator of the BAOS-IES relationship (b=.14, p=.006), while Internalization-Athletic was not (p=.993). Post-hoc analyses stratified by gender followed similar patterns, aside from a negative but nonsignificant relationship between Internalization-Athletic and IES in men (b=-.16, p=.650).
These data suggest that internalization of general (i.e., thin) body image ideals may be more destructive to body satisfaction and adaptive eating styles in college students than athletic-ideal internalization. More research is needed to examine the role of athletic-ideal internalization on body image and eating behaviors.</description><identifier>ISSN: 0744-8481</identifier><identifier>EISSN: 1940-3208</identifier><identifier>DOI: 10.1080/07448481.2021.1947832</identifier><language>eng</language><publisher>Washington: Taylor & Francis</publisher><subject>Acceptance ; Body image ; College students ; Correlation ; Eating behavior ; Eating Habits ; Human Body ; Internalization ; Psychological aspects ; Psychological Patterns ; Self Concept ; Self image ; Social Attitudes ; Social Bias ; Social Influences ; Sociocultural factors ; Undergraduate Students</subject><ispartof>Journal of American college health, 2023-07, Vol.71 (6), p.1797-1803</ispartof><rights>2021 Taylor & Francis Group, LLC 2021</rights><rights>2021 Taylor & Francis Group, LLC</rights><lds50>peer_reviewed</lds50><woscitedreferencessubscribed>false</woscitedreferencessubscribed><citedby>FETCH-LOGICAL-c393t-2561cd280eeea1fbb2c7e199c78e9ce84d30872ed4235b4c2b85de836a7462433</citedby><cites>FETCH-LOGICAL-c393t-2561cd280eeea1fbb2c7e199c78e9ce84d30872ed4235b4c2b85de836a7462433</cites><orcidid>0000-0002-3825-639X</orcidid></display><links><openurl>$$Topenurl_article</openurl><openurlfulltext>$$Topenurlfull_article</openurlfulltext><thumbnail>$$Tsyndetics_thumb_exl</thumbnail><link.rule.ids>314,780,784,27924,27925,30999</link.rule.ids><backlink>$$Uhttp://eric.ed.gov/ERICWebPortal/detail?accno=EJ1400480$$DView record in ERIC$$Hfree_for_read</backlink></links><search><creatorcontrib>Layman, BA, Harley M.</creatorcontrib><creatorcontrib>Keirns, MS, Natalie G.</creatorcontrib><creatorcontrib>Hawkins, PhD, Misty A.
