I recently saw a 24-year-old woman who had a contraceptive suppository inadvertently placed into her bladder. These suppositories (Semicid, Whitehall Laboratories, and Encare-Oval, Eaton Laboratories) contain an acidic spermicide called nonoxynol 9. The patient's husband was in charge of the placement procedure and would always confirm the presence of the suppository at the cervical os before intercourse.
On the night in question, however, he inserted the suppository through the introitus but felt it disappear and could not confirm its presence. Unfortunately, they proceeded to have intercourse. The patient was awakened three hours later with severe cramping and . . .
