description Abstract Operative ultrasound examination was performed in 23 patients since 1982 at the clinic of Paediatric Surgery, University of Mainz. As transducers we used gas-sterilised scan heads with 3.5 and 5 MHz of the Toshiba model 30/6 and the small-part scan head of model SAL 50 with variable focusing. This diagnostic procedure offers advantages for both operative management and technique.1. In the detection and localization of intrahepatic bile ducts, centrally localized intraorganical cysts, primary tumours or metastasis of malignant tumours.2. By using ultrasound imaging during the operation in regions which cannot be palpated and in case of centralised defects of organic parenchyma.3. In treating and reconstructing injuries of parenchyma by examining the depth of the injury without dissection of parenchyma.
