The significance of species differences in respiratory neurophysiology-the split-brainstem preparation

In contrast to the generally accepted view (based upon experiments in cats), a mid-sagittal splitting of the medulla revealed the existence of 2 symmetrical, independent respiratory "centres" in rabbits and monkeys. The role of species differences is stressed.
